DETOX WITH YOGA

Fall is here, the perfect timing for a big cleaning! It is time to detox. When the seasons change, the body goes through major changes too and has to adapt to the new weather and food. In order to help the body, it is advised to purify it and get rid of the toxins it has accumulated during the previous season. Never forget that the body is the vehicle of the soul, we should be thankful everyday for our body and take care of it carefully and lovingly. Cleaning the body inside is like tidying your housed weekly. In yoga, there are three major ways to clean the body: water, air, and food.

WATER INSIDE:

Drink three liters of hot water everyday, if possible outside of meals; it is possible to add herbal tea sometimes. Thyme is good to help the liver, and add nothing else in the water.

WATER OUTSIDE:

The toxins will also go out through the skin, so try to have a shower in the morning and in the evening, or have a bath or go swimming; the water will also hydrate the body through the skin.

 AIR:

Practice the Kapalabati breathing, every morning and evening at sunrise and sunset – meditation is best.

It is a purifying breath: sit still in a comfortable position, cross legged or on a chair, the spine should be straight, close your eyes and relax your body. Inhale naturally and deeply through both nostrils while expanding the abdomen, exhale is made by contracting the abdominal muscles forcefully but don’t strain any parts. Then the next inhale is made naturally while the abdominal muscles are expanding. During the whole process, concentrate your attention on the sixth chakra between the eyebrows. Start with 10 rapid breathes in a row, that is a cycle, do 3 cycles then you can go up to 5 cycles of up to 20 breathes.

 FOOD:

there is a proper diet to help the body get rid of toxins, which can be followed ten days a month during the three months of fall and that is very efficient when combined with what is described above. It can also be followed all year round. Breakfast is fruit, possibly with porridge or oatmeal; lunch is dal (lentils cooked with spices) and vegetables, better raw; and dinner is a soup that can be mixed or broth and vegetables can be eaten separately. Fruit and fruit juices can be eaten and drunk all day long between meals, never during meals. Nothing else should be eaten or drunk: no alcohol, tea, coffee, oil, dairies, meat, fish, eggs, rice, noodles, sugar, sweets, chocolate, bread, etc.. The best spice to use for the veggies is turmeric which is used as an antibiotic in India and the best time in the month to do this diet is after the full moon when it is waning, dates for this year: September 23rd to October 6th, October 23rd to November 5th, November 21st to December 4th, then the body is fully ready for the winter.

 AND MORE:

to help the body, it is also advised to practice yoga postures and meditation 30mins a day, and to take some time in nature: walk, run, swim or sit. This kind of process is tiring, rest is also advised, the body is not used to it and will crave for the usual food, don’t give in, keep focused, stay positive, the way your mind is going to react is the key: you are what you think you are and you can do what you think you can do. Then after this diet, try not to go back to your usual diet on the 11th day on, try to keep it simple and healthy as long as you can so that the next month the body does not have to clean it all over again. You will feel lighter, healthier, and happier. Enjoy and have fun, your body, mind and soul will be rejoiced by this big fall cleaning.
